Three years after Ottawa-born Deepan Budlakoti was ordered deported to a country that won’t take him, he took his fight to a federal court judge Monday demanding an end to “limbo” with a declaration he’s Canadian citizen.
At issue is whether the parents of a man ordered out for “serious criminality” really worked for Indian diplomats when he was born – the exception to automatic citizenship – and if being a man without a country violates his rights and Canada’s promise to end the “evil” of statelessness.
“Enough is enough,” lawyer Peter Stieda argued during during a noisy rally by chanting, banner-waving “Justice for Deepan” supporters.
